Learn How to Applique Using a Sewing Machine

To get started, you'll need a few basic supplies:

  • A sewing machine
  • Fabric for your applique
  • Your base fabric (the item you'll be appliqueing on to)
  • Fusible web
  • Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter

Once you've gathered your supplies, it's time to get started!

How to Applique Using a Sewing Machine

The first step in appliqueing using a sewing machine is to prepare your fabric. Cut out your applique shape from your preferred fabric, making sure it's slightly larger than the final shape you want. Then, cut a piece of fusible web that's the same size as your fabric shape and iron it onto the back of your fabric. Next, remove the paper backing from your fusible web and position your fabric onto your base fabric. Press it into place with an iron.

Now it's time to get sewing! Set your sewing machine to a zigzag stitch and adjust the stitch width and length as needed (start with a width of 2.5 and a length of 0.5). Position your fabric under the needle, making sure to place it so that the zigzag stitch will catch both the applique fabric and the base fabric.

Start sewing slowly and press the foot pedal to keep a steady pace. As you sew, guide the fabric gently but firmly under the needle, making sure to keep it aligned properly. If you're having trouble keeping your fabric in position, you can use a stabilizer to hold it in place.

Once you've sewn all the way around your applique shape, you can finish off your stitching by either backstitching or tying off your thread. Trim any excess fabric threads and voila! You've just appliqued using a sewing machine.

Tips & Tricks

Appliqueing can be a little tricky at first, so here are a few tips and tricks to help you get the hang of it:

  • Practice on scrap fabric before starting your main project
  • Use a stabilizer to help keep your fabric in place
  • Adjust your zigzag stitch width and length to achieve the desired look
  • Choose fabrics that contrast well for a bold look, or match closely for a more subtle effect
