The Sew Together Bag is an excellent storage bag that is perfect for the little things you love. Designed with three zippered pockets, four open pockets, a pincushion, and a great little needle landing, this useful bag will hold all of your sewing stuff.
The Sew Together Bag has a unique opening system where the side panels rotate away from each other, creating a wide-open workspace. You can easily carry this bag around, and it has a comfortable handle that makes it super easy to grab and go.
Materials
- Exterior fabric (1 fat quarter)
- Lining fabric (1 fat quarter)
- Pocket lining fabric (1 fat quarter)
- Contrasting fabric for binding (1 fat quarter)
- Fusible fleece (1/3 yard)
- Zipper (14 inches)
- Zippers (7 inches) (x3)
- Thread
Pattern Sizes
The Sew Together Bag comes in one size with external measurements of approximately 10″ x 5″ x 5″. However, you can easily adjust the size up or down to fit your specific needs.
How to Sew a Sew Together Bag
Step 1 – Cut the fabric
Before you start sewing, you have to cut your fabric. Here are the pieces you will need:
- Exterior fabric – cut (1) 18” x 14”
- Lining fabric – cut (2) 18” x 14” and (1) 16¼” x 2”
- Pocket lining fabric – cut (3) 18” x 7”
- Contrasting fabric for binding – cut (3) 2½” x WOF (width of fabric)
- Fusible fleece – cut (1) 18” x 14”
Step 2 – Fuse the fleece
Fuse the fusible fleece to the wrong side of the exterior fabric.
Step 3 – Sew the pockets
Sew the pockets by folding each pocket lining in half with wrong sides together, and press well. Place one pocket on top of the other and baste the three sides together. Repeat the process with the third pocket.
Step 4 – Attach the pockets
Attach the pockets to the lining piece by placing them right side together, starting at the bottom and topstitching in place. You need to stitch them 13/4″ from the bottom.
Step 5 – Add the zipper
With your zipper open, sew the outside fabric to the zipper tape, right sides together, using a ¼” seam allowance. Do the same to the other long side of the zipper with the pocket lining.
Repeat for the second pocket lining and exterior fabric, being sure to leave a space of about 2″ to turn it right side out. Once you turn it right side out, sew up the hole.
Step 6 – Sew the ends
With the zipper closed, sew both side seams, right sides together. Sew only the end of the zipper side next to the teeth. Sew the other end past the teeth.
Step 7 – Box the corners
Sew a box corner so that your bag lies flat. Box the corners on all four sides.
Step 8 – Bind the raw edges
Cut the binding strips (2½” x width of fabric) in half. Fold one strip in half and iron, wrong sides together. Open, and fold the raw edges to the center crease. Iron, then fold again at the center crease, and press well.
Attach binding to the front of the bag, then wrap around the back to cover the raw edges, then stitch in place on the front.
Step 9 – Attach the handle
You can attach your bag handle at this point. Simply measure approximately 4″ from each binding end, mark where you’d like to place the handle, then stitch in place.
Step 10 – Finishing Touches
Finally, turn your bag right side out. You now have an awesome portable Sew Together Bag that you can keep all your sewing supplies in.
