How To Adjust A Sewing Pattern For A Different Armhole Size

Have you ever noticed that your shirts don't fit quite right? Perhaps the shoulders seem to be sitting farther back than they should. This is a common issue known as "forward shoulder." Luckily, it's an easy alteration to make.

How to Fix Forward Shoulder

The first step is to identify whether you have forward shoulder. Stand with your back against a wall and look at yourself in the mirror. If your shoulder blades are not touching the wall, then you have forward shoulder.

Now that you know what you're dealing with, it's time to make the alteration. Follow these steps:

  1. Start by measuring the distance between the base of your neck and the tip of your shoulder bone.
  2. Mark the halfway point on the shoulder seam of your garment.
  3. On the back of the garment, make a mark the same distance down from the base of the neck as your shoulder bone measurement.
  4. Next, draw a line from that mark to the midpoint on the shoulder seam.
  5. Cut along this line, making sure to leave a seam allowance.
  6. Now you can resew the shoulder seam, lining up the midpoint on the seam with the midpoint on the back of the garment.

And there you have it - a perfectly fitting garment without any unwanted shoulder bagginess.

Tips & Tricks

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Always make sure to mark your fabric with a removable pen or chalk to ensure accuracy.
  • Try on your garment frequently during the alteration process to ensure the best fit.
  • If you have any doubts or questions, don't be afraid to consult a professional tailor.

With these tips and tricks in mind, you'll be able to master the art of fixing forward shoulder in no time. Happy sewing!
