Sewing Patterns For DIY Fabric Sunglass Cases And Pouches
Are you in the mood for a little DIY project? Well, you're in luck because today I'm going to share a free sewing pattern and YouTube sewalong for an awesome groovy glasses case. This case is perfect for sunglasses or reading glasses and is sure to add some flair to your daily routine. Take a look at the image below to see what I'm talking about:
How to Make the Groovy Glasses Case
Alright, let's get started with the instructions. Here's what you'll need:
- 1/4 yard fabric for exterior
- 1/4 yard fabric for lining
- 1/4 yard fusible fleece
- 1/4 yard medium weight interfacing
- Magnetic snap or velcro closure
- Coordinating thread
- Scissors
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Sewing machine
Step 1: Cut out your fabric pieces. You should have two pieces each of the exterior and lining fabric, as well as the fusible fleece and interfacing. Cut the exterior and lining pieces to 7.5 x 3.5 inches, and the fusible fleece and interfacing to 7 x 3 inches.
Step 2: Fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the exterior pieces, following the manufacturer's instructions for your chosen fusible fleece. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the lining pieces.
Step 3: Place one exterior piece right side up, and place the other exterior piece on top, right side down. Pin along one of the 3.5-inch edges, and sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Repeat with the lining pieces.
Step 4: Turn the exterior piece right side out and press. Insert the lining piece (still inside out) into the exterior piece. Pin along the top edge and sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving a 2-inch gap for turning.
Step 5: Turn the case right side out through the gap in the lining. Press the case, making sure to turn the raw edges of the gap to the inside. Topstitch along the top edge of the case.
Step 6: Attach your magnetic snap or velcro closure to the top flap and body of the case. Make sure the closure is in the correct position before sewing.
And voila! You have a groovy glasses case that's sure to turn heads. Now onto some tips and tricks to make the process easier:
Tips & Tricks
- Use a rotary cutter and cutting mat for more precise cuts and faster cutting.
- Use a walking foot for heavier fabrics, especially if you're using a quilting cotton for the exterior.
- Use a fabric glue pen to hold the fleece and interfacing in place before ironing.
- Use a chopstick or turning tool to help turn the case right side out through the gap in the lining.
- Use a pressing cloth to protect your iron and fabric when ironing the closure.
- Experiment with different fabrics and closures to make the case your own.
And there you have it, folks! A simple and fun project that's perfect for even beginner sewers. So gather your materials, set up your sewing machine, and let's get to work!
