Sewing Patterns For DIY Fabric Bookmarks And Journal Covers
Looking for a fun and easy DIY project to make for yourself or to give as a thoughtful gift? Why not try making your own bookmarks? Not only can you personalize your bookmarks to your liking, but it also makes for a great conversation starter when reading with others.

For this project, we suggest making fabric bookmarks. Not only are they durable, but they are also easy to make and you can choose from a variety of colors and patterns to match your personality.
How to Make Fabric Bookmarks
What you will need:
- Fabric (we recommend cotton)
- Scissors
- Thread (in a matching color to your fabric)
- Sewing machine or a needle to sew by hand
- Iron/Ironing board
Step 1: Choose Your Fabric
Choose a piece of cotton fabric that you like. We recommend using a contrasting pattern or color so your bookmark stands out when you are using it in your book.
Step 2: Cut Your Fabric to Size
Cut your fabric to the desired size of your bookmark. We suggest making them around 2 inches wide and 7 inches long, but you can adjust the size to your liking.
Step 3: Iron Your Fabric
Iron your fabric to smooth out any wrinkles or creases. This will make it easier to fold and sew your bookmark.
Step 4: Fold and Sew
Fold your fabric in half, right sides together. Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew around the edges of your bookmark, leaving a small hole at the top. Once you have sewn around the edges, carefully turn your bookmark right side out through the small hole you left.
Step 5: Finish Your Bookmark
Using your needle and thread, sew the small hole shut. You can also add a decorative element to your bookmark by adding a button, ribbon, or even a piece of lace. Get creative!
Tips & Tricks:
- Use pinking shears to make your edges have a zigzag finish, which will prevent fraying.
- Use leftover fabric scraps to create unique patterns and styles for your bookmarks.
- Make a whole set of bookmarks in different patterns and colors for yourself, or to give as gifts to your book-loving friends and family.
Give this fun and easy DIY project a try and let us know how it goes! With a little bit of time and creativity, you'll have a set of personalized bookmarks in no time.
