Sewing Patterns For Drawstring Backpacks And Gym Bags

Hey there guys and gals!

Looking for a great way to stay organized and stylish at the gym or in a PE class? Well you've come to the right place because today we're going to be showing you how to make a super cute drawstring backpack that will make all your workout gear dreams come true!

How to Make a Drawstring Gym/PE Kit Backpack

To start off, you'll need the following materials:

  • 1 yard of fabric
  • 1 yard of lining fabric
  • 1 yard of lightweight fusible interfacing
  • 2 yards of cording or ribbon
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins

Step 1: Cut out your fabric

Start by cutting out two pieces of your main fabric and two pieces of lining fabric to the following dimensions:

  • 14" x 16"

Next, cut two pieces of interfacing to the same dimensions.

Step 2: Fuse the interfacing to your fabric

Following the manufacturer's instructions, fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of your main fabric pieces.

Step 3: Sew the main fabric and lining together

Place one piece of main fabric and one piece of lining fabric right sides together and sew along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Repeat with the other two pieces of fabric.

Step 4: Create the casing for the drawstring

With the right sides still together, fold down the top of each bag about 1 1/4" and press. Then, fold it down again about 1" and press again. Sew close to the edge to create a casing for your drawstring.

Step 5: Insert the drawstring

Using a safety pin attached to one end of the cording or ribbon, thread it through one casing and then through the other, making sure the ends are even. Tie the ends in a knot to prevent them from slipping through the casing.

Tips & Tricks

Here are a few tips to make your drawstring backpack even better:

  • Choose a fabric that speaks to you and your style. Make it colorful, bold, and fun!
  • If you want a more sturdy backpack, you can use a heavier weight fabric like canvas or denim.
  • Personalize your backpack by adding your name, a fun design, or even iron-on patches.
  • If you're feeling adventurous, try mixing and matching different fabrics for a one-of-a-kind look!

And that's it! With just a few materials and some basic sewing skills, you can create a stylish and functional drawstring backpack that will take your gym game to the next level. Happy crafting!
